We have some great news for our guests from New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada, United Kingdom and the EU – you are now allowed to drive in the Cook Islands using your own current drivers licence.
Previously, visitors to the Cook Islands had to obtain a local licence from the Police National Headquarters in Rarotonga, a process that was often time consuming and confusing.
The new law, effective immediately, states that visitors aged over 16 are allowed to drive the class of motor vehicle they are entitled to drive in their home country for up to six months.
This means that people wishing to ride a motorbike or scooter who are not licensed to do so in their home country still need to obtain a local licence in Rarotonga.
Hiring a rental car is a fantastic way to explore the island’s stunning beaches, the inland road and tropical gardens. Visitors to the island also love to visit the Saturday Punanga Nui market, and some of the cultural shows on the island. Now the option of driving has become so much easier for our guests, a positive move that we welcome.
Note: Visitors whose licences are written in a language other than English will need an accurate translation.

We have just returned from 10 days in Rarotonga it is everything a tropical paradise should be. Although we didn’t stay at the rumours villas we did come in for a lovely massage treatment. Myr came in on her day off to accommodate us and we all had lovely luxurious massages. Myr has magic hands and one of our party had never had a massage before. She came out feeing 3 inches taller and felt like she was walking on air. It was a shame that we didn’t have any time to return before heading back to NZ. This would definitely be on our itinerary when we return we are already saving again to come back… A big thanks to Myr for making it so special.
Regards, Heather, Sharon and Carole

A recent guest of Rumours Luxury Villas and Spa had an amazing ‘once in a lifetime’ experience while out fishing with local Marlin Queen Fishing Charters off Rarotonga.
The keen Australian fisherman and his fellow anglers were in the process of reeling in Tuna when a Whale Shark approached their boat. The 8-10 metre shark then nudged it’s head against the outboard motor, only to return to butt the motor again, before disappearing back into the deep.
Our guest managed to get some incredible video footage of the inquisitive creature, who whale experts say was probably just being curious rather than aggressive. The Cook Island News spoke to Ali Haible, daughter of whale researcher Nan Hauser, who said whale sharks are fairly common in Rarotongan waters and are known for their curiosity.
“Humpback whales here won’t usually come up to the boat but whale sharks are pretty brave and friendly,” she said. Whale sharks live for between 70 and 100 years and the average adult is 41 feet long and weighs 21 tonnes. Haible said the enormous fish tend to hang out around the FADs (fish aggregation devices) and tuna schools.
The exciting day was topped off by one of the fishermen landing an 85kg marlin.
The Management and staff at Rumours in Rarotonga are shocked by the news that Charlotte Dawson has died, and we would like to send our heart-felt thoughts and prayers to her family and friends.
Charlotte first came to stay at Rumours a few years ago when filming/presenting a segment on a TV Travel Show on Luxury Villas in the Cook Islands, and on that occasion Rumours was the property of choice for this show. Obviously she really enjoyed her time with us as the following year she returned for a private holiday.
During these two stays we got to know Charlotte as a vibrant and enthusiastic person who was very down to earth and genuine. She took her work very seriously, but still enjoyed having a glass of wine and an informal chat, and it was during her second visit that we got to know her as a person a little more. She was just a very nice lady and will be missed all the more because of it.
Rumours Management and Staff
At Rumours Luxury Villas and Spa we strive to give our guests the best possible holiday while here on Rarotonga. A key attribute of Rumours management and staff is that we all genuinely care. We received some feedback recently which perfectly illustrates this:
We would like to thank you all for an amazing stay here at Rumours. Unfortunately nobody would adopt us, so we have to go home.
We will absolutely be back to Rarotonga and look forward to staying at Rumours again, hopefully in the next few months.
To the Cleaner and Manager, thank you for all that you have done, and thank you for the 5 star brekkie, the smoothies are the best!
Ka kite ano

There have been quite a few whale sightings around the island recently, some not far from Rumours. If you are not already aware, June-November is Humpback Whale Migration season for Rarotonga. The first sightings this year were at the end of May, and by the end of June there were daily sightings off Avarua and the west of the island. Most sightings have been in the mornings or evenings, but the 11am Reef Sub was lucky to get an amazing display from a male Humpback whale that sang, breached, and somersaulted for them for over an hour!
The best place on Rarotonga to spot humpback whales is along the north coast where the coral reef edge is closest to shore, and the most popular spots with good vantage viewing is Avarua Town and Black Rock on the north west coast.
It really is a spectacular sight to see these majestic creatures surfacing so close. Often you will see both mother and calf, and sometimes you may even see up to three whales surfacing together. The whales migrate from the cooler climate of Antarctica up to the warm tropical waters of the Cook Islands to give birth. They usually spend a few months here with their calves, before heading back down to the Antarctica summer.
Rarotongan resident whale expert (Whale biologist and researcher) Nan Hauser has just arrived back on the island. She will now take some ID shots from the whale breachings to identify the age and sex of the whales we are seeing.
The Whale Research Centre, located on the back road from Avarua Town, has information about the migration, news on recent sightings and a small collection of memorabilia. This is well worth a visit.
Rumours was approached last year by the NZ High Commissioner Mr. John Carter as to whether Rumours would be interested in helping this very worthwhile project. We committed a donation of a percentage of all the Waterfall Spa income over the months of November and December 2012.
We have recently transfered over the total amount to the NZ High Commmissioner for placement into the Troubled Youth Project account.
Rumours would like to thank our great spa team and all the locals who supported the Spa during these months so that the funding in the Troubled Youth account could be substantially increased. It is very encouraging to see projects like this being undertaken in the Cook Islands so that our young people can upskill and take a positive place in our community.
The beautiful tall ship Picton Castle is in Avatiu Harbour, Rarotonga for the next three weeks, and worth a visit to observe or even take a half day voyage.
The Picton Castle is registered in the Cook Islands but calls Nova Scotia home. Her main role is long distance sailing training and education, and she also delivers cargo to locations on her journeys. Before arriving in the Pacific she sailed through the Panama Canal and in total this nostalgic sailing ship has been around the globe five times.
While in the Cooks the Picton Castle will make two voyages delivering supplies to a number of the more isolated islands.
There are currently 30 crew members and up to 30 trainees and apprentices could be taken on for the next journey to the Cook’s northern group of islands. Sailing experience is not required, so if you are in need of a huge adventure or major change of scene then head down to Avatiu Harbour or visit the Picton Castle website
For those who can’t just sail away, there are opportunities for half day sailing trips out around Rarotonga.
